The Burdekin Association Inc

Also known as “Avalon Youth Hub”, The Burdekin Association Inc is a large-scale charity established in 1981. Their main activity is registered as social services primarily serving youth - 15 to under 25.

We work with the community to offer an integrated approach to preventing and solving issues of child and youth homelessness. Our vision is that all children, young people and their families are empowered and supported to develop their full potential and have the life skills and opportunities to lead a full and active life in our community. We do this through 4 core program areas, Community and Family Intervention, Out of Home Care and Youth Housing. Our model represents a continuum of care and Aftercare, supporting children from 12-24 ensuring that they have consistent quality care, support and accommodation when required. Our key Case Managers are linked to the child/young person and follow them into whatever program they require at the time. This ensures there is consistency and enables a sold helping relationship to form which is so important in the hard times and allows us to celebrate the great times. When we hear young people tell us 'this is the best place I have ever been to, it is the first time I have felt cared for and respected' you know you are on the right track. We have a continuous improvement process informed by staff, young people, community, stakeholders, funders. Our Quality Assurance framework ensures the consistency and quality of the data collected and the services delivered. We measure on a daily micro level that the needs of an individual child's placement remains best placed to assist them, every facet is often considered to ensure they are able to feel safe and to grow and learn. We review a young person's social/emotional/risk/strengths and living skills through both formalised testing and anecdotal recording to ensure there is forward movement in all areas and if there is not this informs our practice that it needs to change or work harder. We measure the restoration of relationships with family/significant others during the period a young person is with us as we know on departure from our service 40% of young people return to live with family or significant others when they leave our service and over 80% have an improved relationship. We conduct yearly staff appraisals to ensure we strive to provide quality care and support.....we evaluate all we do in many more ways.
