Activities & Outcomes in 2015

The year 2015 has been one of growth for the Sydney Refugee Team. The refugee crisis in Syria & Europe has resulted in an almost overwhelming flurry of requests from people wanting to know how they can help. Many of the offers were particularly targeted at the 12000 extra refugees that the Australian government offered to accept from Syria & Iraq. Although these extra refugees have not yet arrived, there is still significant need among the refugee & asylum seeker community in Sydney. In particular those people seeking asylum in Australia (the so-called legacy caseload of about 30000 people) are facing significant challenges as they search for work (which only became permissible for them in 2015) & waiting for determination of their refugee status (with 3 year TPV & 5 year SHEV visas starting to be rolled out). The heart of what we do as the Sydney Refugee Team is to train & empower individuals & churches to build meaningful relationships with refugees & asylum seekers who are living in our community in Sydney. Both SRT staff & volunteers are building relationships with an increasing number of refugees & asylum seekers. During the year we provided weekly food parcels for 14-16 families, most of whom were asylum seekers without work rights & limited financial support. We also sourced & delivered furniture & household goods for a number of families. We ran 2 Family Weekends at Teen Ranch during the year. The first, in May, was attended by 9 refugee & asylum seeker families 52 people in all. The second, in November, was attended by 10 families 37 refugees & asylum seekers. At these weekends, people have the opportunity to form new friendships, have fun in various recreational activities & also hear a gospel message in three sessions. At the conclusion of the November weekend, one of the families said to us, This is the best weekend that we have had in the 6 months that we have been in Australia! This year we also started a fortnightly Ladies Group. The group is attended by 6 regular ladies (mostly from Persia) & 4 children. The ladies enjoy connecting with each other & the helpers over a cuppa, various activities & a Bible devotion. During the year we ran 2 events for families, in partnership with churches. The first was a picnic at Lake Parramatta Park. This event was supported by a team from Dalby Presbyterian Church. It was well attended & enjoyed by many families. We also held our inaugural SRT Christmas party in December. This event was attended by about 160 people both refugees & volunteers. The event illustrates church partnership in action with 3 churches providing Christmas gift hampers for each family, 2 churches providing gifts for each of the children & another church providing the catering for the event.
