Illawarra Drug Awareness Group Ltd

Also known as “Life Education Illawarra”, Illawarra Drug Awareness Group Ltd is a small-scale charity established in 1997. Their main activity is registered as primary and secondary education primarily serving children - aged 6 to under 15.

Life Education Illawarra educates children about the dangers associated with the misuse of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs and the effect it has on their bodies. We support two Mobile Learning Centres (MLCs), each with a qualified Educator, which deliver preventative health and drug education programs on-site at primary schools, as well as an early childhood program to preschools. We create awareness, encourage reflection, provide knowledge and help children to develop strategies and skills to deal with everyday situations, with an emphasis of providing fully funded visits to schools located within identified low socio-economic areas. Life Education has endured for more than 30 years in the Illawarra because of its relevance, value and critical role it plays in educating children about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Since starting in the Illawarra, over 220 000 children have experienced our programs at either a primary school or pre-school. We create a strong presence by being the only provider of these on-site programs. Our emphasis for these programs were schools within low socio-economic areas and the need for them to have access to our programs (not restricted by cost). We fully subsidised visits to as many schools as possible targeted within low socio-economic areas within the Wollongong LGA, so that children are not restricted on participation due to their socio economic standing. These schools were targeted based on their ranking on the FOEI index, as issued by the NSW Department of Education & Communities (DoEC). We are all about making a positive impact in childrens lives, contributing to an improvement in their lifestyle choices and quality of life. By placing preventative education at the core of our work, we instil in children the confidence to make safer and healthier choices, not only now, but in the future. Our programs enhance the cultural, physical and living environment of those children and their families. It is undeniable the positive effect that Harold and our preventative programs have on children and the important lessons that many of them carry through into adulthood. Throughout 2018, we were able to visit 64 schools and educated more than 17,600 primary school students in Illawarra. 46 of these schools were within Wollongong LGA and 32 schools located within low socio-economic areas in Illawarra were fully funded. Our aim for 2019 is to provide fully funded visits to 25 primary schools located within low socio-economic areas in the Illawarra. We will also continue with our commitment to heavily subsidise the cost of participating in our programs for all other children, subsidising our visits by $5 per child (as compared to $3 in other regions).
