Sail & Adventure Limited

Sail & Adventure Limited is a small-scale charity established in 1977. Their main activity is registered as economic, social and community development primarily serving general community in australia.

Principal Activities After being laid-up in Port Macquarie as a static museum ship, Alma Doepel successfully returned to Melbourne and Victoria Harbour in January 2009 as the first stage of a plan to return the ship to active service. Since her arrival in Melbourne considerable work has been accomplished in preparing the ship for a complete restoration. Much of this work has been achieved by a group of dedicated volunteers who to date have contributed a total of 63,828 man hours. A further 697 hours have been contributed under an agreement with the YMCA and its Bridge Project. In addition 4,248 hours were worked by staff members of the National Australia Bank, GIO and Ford Motor Company under their respective companies employee volunteering programs. The Company also acknowledges a number of generous and significant gifts in kind from businesses and government instrumentalities which are contributing towards the ships restoration. For the purposes of this report, no attempt has been made to place a monetary value on the voluntary work and gifts in kind. The Companys short term objective is the full restoration of its major asset, the sailing ship Alma Doepel. The long term objective is the re-commissioning of the vessel as a sail training ship for the benefit of the youth in the State of Victoria. In order to achieve its short term objective the Company has focused on raising funds. This has been done firstly, by gaining the endorsement of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and, through its medium of conduit funding, obtaining tax deductibility for donations. Secondly the Company is seeking the support of major sponsors. In all, the target is to provide a total of $3million to finance full restoration of the ship to commercial passenger-carrying survey standards. The support of major sponsors together with funds raised through the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Alma Doepel External Appeal have enabled the ship to be placed on a purpose built submersible barge allowing the extensive hull restoration currently in progress. The Company received a professional engineering report on the ships structure as part of the requirements for developing the work plan for return to commercial operation under survey. The report was forwarded to the survey authority (Transport Safety Victoria) with the marine engineers and shipwrights recommendations concerning the work to be undertaken during restoration and the criteria to be used for repair and replacement of structural components of the ship. The recommendations have been included in the project plan that describes the program of works.
