In 2020, Grata achieved its purpose of providing relief to suffering individuals by relieving financial barriers to access to justice and by creating change on law or policies causing injustice. We did this by identifying and liaising with groups affected by statute, common law, administrative law, government law and government procedure and discussing the rights and remedies available to relieve their suffering; assessing whether the most effective way to provide relief to these individuals was to pursue legal action. Where it was, we ensured that identified plaintiffs were appropriate for the public interest litigation; ensured that an appropriate law firm represented the plaintiffs based on the firms knowledge, skills, experience and appropriateness to the client or client group; collaborated with the plaintiffs and the engaged firm to launch litigation; assessed whether the aggrieved individuals had the access and the financial means to obtain appropriate legal services and assistance to battle the injustice; and provided financial support. Further, Grata Fund provided information to the public about injustices caused by statute, the common law, administrative law, government policy, government procedure or a combination of these; provided information to the public about what is required to cure the injustices and suffering by one or more individuals.
